Alpha Particle Scattering Apparatus

The Alpha Particle Scattering Apparatus demonstrates Rutherford scattering by means of a gravitational analogue of inverse square law repulsion. A 19mm diameter steel ball is launched from a wooden ramp towards a spun aluminium hill.
The height of the aluminium hill above the base line varies with the reciprocal of the radius, so a ball rolling onto it is pushed aside much as an alpha particle is repelled by a nucleus. The ball runs down a groove in the ramp's curved face, and the four marked heights let each launch be repeated from a known starting point.
