The Chain Reaction Apparatus demonstrates a chain reaction using ordinary matches set in an aluminium plate with holes. Six metal pins are included for damping the reaction.
Matches set in the plate catch light from one another in turn, modelling how a chain reaction spreads. Adding the metal pins damps the reaction, so the same plate can show uncontrolled, controlled and partly controlled chain reactions. Because the burning matches give off a lot of smoke, the demonstrations should preferably be carried out in a fume cupboard.
