The Diffusion Cloud Chamber operates continuously for observing alpha particle tracks and requires no high voltage source. With 50 g of dry ice and 1-2 mL of alcohol it runs for about 30 minutes.
Tracks left by alpha particles become visible inside the chamber, giving students a direct view of radiation from an alpha source. The chamber runs on a dry ice pellet and a little alcohol, and a single 50 g charge of dry ice keeps it going for about 30 minutes. A 12 V lamp is built in, and no high voltage supply is involved.
