Discharge Sphere

The Discharge Sphere is a polished stainless steel sphere on a stainless steel rod, used to discharge a Van de Graaff with sparks up to 10 cm. The sphere is 10 cm in diameter and the rod is 41 cm long.
Brought towards a charged Van de Graaff, this apparatus discharges it with sparks of up to 10 cm. Before use, the 4 mm hole at the base of the rod is connected to the earth socket on the Van de Graaff. Both the sphere and its mounting rod are stainless steel, with the sphere given a polished finish.
