The Fine Beam Tube (Neon-Filled) with Connector Base produces a narrow, luminescent electron beam for investigating the deflection of cathode rays in a uniform magnetic field. Built-in measurement marks allow a parallax-free reading of the diameter of the beam's circular path.
Set between a pair of 300 mm Helmholtz coils, the tube shows the electron beam bent into a circular path by a uniform magnetic field. Reading the circle's diameter against the built-in marks allows a quantitative determination of the specific charge of the electron, e/m. A protective circuit in the base shuts off any voltage above its pre-set cut-off and gives a smooth switch-on, so excessive voltages cannot damage the heater filament.
