The GM Tube Test Source is used to test the beta efficiency of GM tubes. It holds 300 ±5 mg of potassium chloride in a 2 x 13 mm dia. cavity, sealed with clear film of a specified thickness and density.
Potassium chloride is naturally radioactive because of the 0.0117% of potassium-40 it contains, so a measured sample serves as a beta source for checking how efficiently a GM tube detects beta particles. The source should be kept away from sunlight, as UV will degrade the plastic.
