Ice Melting Kit Advanced

The Ice Melting Kit Advanced demonstrates the thermal conductivity of materials by melting ice cubes between metal blocks. It includes an acrylic base with sump, an acrylic tube, two 0.5kg copper blocks, two 0.5kg steel blocks and two plastic insulating discs.
One copper block is placed on the acrylic base, the tube is lowered over it, an ice cube is dropped down the tube and the second copper block is set on top. The high thermal conductivity of copper, along with a large thermal mass, melts the ice in 10-15 seconds, while the same test with the steel blocks melts it more slowly. Each run can be timed for a more accurate comparison, and the insulating discs show that the pressure of the top block alone is not what melts the ice.
