The Relay Demonstration unit is used to investigate how a relay works, with a 2 V DC control input switching a separate circuit of up to 12 V.
When current flows through the coil, an electromagnetic field attracts the iron armature, whose end makes the contact, completes the circuit and lights the lamp; switching the current off opens the contact again. Because the coil circuit is clearly separate from the switched circuit, the unit also shows why relays let a safe low-voltage circuit control a high-voltage one.
