Spark Discharge Apparatus

The Spark Discharge Apparatus shows the random nature of radiation: bright sparks appear when alpha particles cause ionisation between a charged circular wire grid and a steel electrode. It needs a 5kV EHT power supply and an alpha radiation source.
Each spark marks ionisation by an alpha particle, so watching the sparks shows how irregularly radiation arrives. Moving the source along its sliding holder and reading the scale lets students study how the distance between source and grid changes the effect. For counting, the unit connects to a timer scaler and frequency meter through a BNC to BNC cable.
