The Voltaic Pile is the earliest and simplest form of battery, made up of 10 copper and 10 zinc elements separated by felt discs and stacked on a shaft with a base. It is used for building a simple cell.
Copper and zinc elements are stacked on the shaft with felt discs between them to build a simple cell. The felt discs must first be impregnated with an electrolyte, such as ammonium chloride or an acid or base solution. As the earliest and simplest form of battery, the pile shows the basic make-up of a cell clearly.
