The Wood / Metal Cylinder is a copper tube attached to a wooden rod of equal diameter, giving a simple demonstration of conduction and insulation. It measures 190 x 22 mm (L x Dia.).
A piece of paper is wrapped tightly around the central section so that it covers both the wood and the metal. The cylinder is then passed through a Bunsen burner flame for a few seconds, making sure both parts go through the flame. The copper conducts heat away so the paper over it hardly browns, while the wood is an insulator and the paper there is scorched.
